On-the-Job Training & Field Visits 2009-10: A Report

During the academic year 2009-10 we could arrange On-the-Job Training for second year VHS students in two hospitals in Perinthalmanna town. The 10 days’ O.J.T. was arranged from 19th Dec 2009 to 28th Dec 2009. The different hospitals that we could arrange the O.J.T. are the following:

1) Maulana Hospital, Perinthalmanna
2) EMS Memorial Co-operative Hospital, Perinthalmanna

Students were divided into different groups. Staff members were assigned to the groups and he/she escorted them every day and stayed at the hospital during the training session. Everyday students prepared reports and kept signed by the concerned staff members.

During the On-the-Job Training, students got trained in different medical sections and could attend and observe different cases in various departments.

On the valedictory function, students distributed sweets among the Personnel in the hospital. Certificates were issued by the Hospital Authorities and given to students. Students prepared detailed report and submitted for evaluation.

The On-the-Job Training helped the students to familiarise with modern technologies and new situation in a different atmosphere. O.J.T. also helped to develop vocational competency, work culture, values and attitudes in the learners’ minds.

Field Visit Report:

During the academic year 2009-10, we could arrange Field visit for 2nd year students in three medical institutions. The field visit was arranged from 3rd Aug 2009 to 15th Aug 2009.

(1) @ MES Medical College Hospital, Perinthalmanna (4th Aug 2009):

Students were divided into two groups. A Biomedical staff was assigned to each group and he escorted them in all departments. The students could visit the following departments in the hospital and able to get more information about these departments.

  • Blood bank
  • Central lab
  • Physiotherapy department
  • CSSD (Central Sterile Supply Department)
  • Dialysis department
  • ICU (Intensive Care Unit)
  • Radiology – X-rays & CT (Computed Tomography)
(2) @ Dr. Shaji’s MRI Centre, Perinthalmanna (5th Aug 2009 to 11th Aug 2009):

Students were divided into 5 groups. A staff member was assigned to each group and he/she escorted them. The students could visit the MRI and Neuro-Diagnosis departments and could get more information about the following:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scan
  • Digital Electroencephalography
  • Electromyography
  • Nerve Conduction Velocity Study
  • Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response
  • Visual Evoked Potential
3. @ IMA Blood Bank, Govt. Hospital, Perinthalmanna (3rd Aug 2009 to 15th Aug 2009):

The students were divided in to 4 batches (3 days for each batch). The students and the escorting staffs visited the following departments of Blood bank.

  • RECEPTION
  • COLLECTION
  • STORAGE
  • COMPONENT SEPARATION
  • PROCESSING
After completion of the Field Visits, students prepared Reports and submitted for evaluation. The Field Visits help the students to familiarise with modern technologies and new trends in the field. After completion of the visit, their responses were great. These kinds of activities help the students to develop their Vocational competency.
