One-Day Orientation Training Programme for Adolescent Girls: 23rd Nov 2009

Adolescence is the most crucial period in a person's life. Adolescent girls go through a turbulent phase at this time due to rapid physical growth accompanied by mental, emotional and physiological changes. Gender inequalities give adolescent girls less social exposure and less opportunity. Moreover, adolescent girls are future mothers and investing in their welfare is crucial in promoting maternal and child health.  During adolescence, girls need proper nutrition, care and guidance. They also need, exposure to more opportunities and ways of improving their self-esteem and decision making capabilities.

To address the above mentioned needs of the adolescent girls, Government of India have accorded sanction for the implementation of “Kishori Shakthi Yojana” in the 163 selected schools in the State. Our school is also a part of this programme.

“Prevalence of Iron Deficiency Anaemia among school children in G.V.H.S.S. Perinthalmanna” - Project No.1 by VHSE students:

The study aims to assess the prevalence of anaemia among school children in G.V.H.S.S. Perinthalmanna. According to a UNICEF report, more than two billion people worldwide are anaemic; due mostly to iron deficiency. The prevalence of anaemia is disproportionately high in developing countries due to dietary practices, high disease burden, frequent pregnancies, and poor access to health services.

Anaemia has a serious negative impact on growth and development during adolescence (11-19 years of age). Adolescence is an opportune time for interventions to address anaemia. Also, adolescents are open to new information and new practices since they are often striving for physical or academic excellence.

A cross-sectional questionnaire was prepared and relevant information are collected from the 8th, 9th and 10th standard students. Based on the data collected, the possibly anaemic students were identified. Hb estimation was done by the students under the supervision of MLT teacher and instructor.

MLT students doing the blood test

With the help of the questionnaire, 80 high school students were identified prone to anaemia. After the Hb estimation, they are classified as:
  • Normal : 46 Nos.
  • Mild anaemic : 28 Nos.
  • Severe anaemic : 6 Nos.
In the 80 students we tested, 34 were identified as 'anaemic'.

  • B -ve : 1 No.
  • AB +ve : 3 Nos.
  • AB -ve : NIL
  • O +ve : 26 Nos.
  • O -ve : 3 Nos.
Normal occurrence:
  • O group : 45%
  • B group : 30%
  • A group : 20%
  • AB group : 5%
The analysis of test results almost matches the normal occurrence.

"BP - The silent killer" - Free BP check-up -  Project No.3 by VHSE students:
